Major Currency Pairs Explained: The 7 Pairs Every Trader Should Know
FX Trading Institute, Mumbai | Updated August 2026
There are dozens of currency pairs available on any trading platform. Beginners often look at that list and feel overwhelmed.
Here's the liberating truth: professional traders mostly watch a handful. Learn those few properly and you have access to the deepest, most liquid, most well-behaved markets in the world.
This guide explains what a currency pair actually is, introduces the seven majors, and tells you which ones to start with.
First: What Is a Currency Pair?
Every forex quote compares two currencies. That's all a pair is — a comparison.
- The base currency comes first. Its quantity is always 1.
- The quote currency comes second. It tells you how much of it you need to buy one unit of the base.
So if EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0900, the euro has strengthened against the dollar. If it falls to 1.0800, the dollar has strengthened against the euro.
And here's the elegant part: you can profit from either direction. Buying (going long) if you expect the base to strengthen, or selling (going short) if you expect it to weaken. There's no "bad" market direction in forex — only movement, and movement is opportunity.
The 7 Major Currency Pairs
The "majors" all include the US dollar on one side. They are the most heavily traded pairs in the world, which means the tightest spreads, the deepest liquidity, and the most reliable technical behaviour.
| Pair | Nickname | Character | Best session (IST) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | Fiber | The most traded pair on earth. Smooth, technical, beginner-friendly. | Evening (London + NY) |
| GBP/USD | Cable | Bigger daily range. Rewards traders who like decisive movement. | Evening (London + NY) |
| USD/JPY | Ninja | Clean trends, very orderly. A favourite of technical traders. | Morning (Tokyo) & evening |
| USD/CHF | Swissy | The Swiss franc has safe-haven qualities, like gold. | Afternoon–evening |
| AUD/USD | Aussie | Linked to commodities and Asian growth. | Morning (Sydney/Tokyo) |
| USD/CAD | Loonie | Sensitive to oil prices. | Evening (NY) |
| NZD/USD | Kiwi | Similar drivers to the Aussie. | Morning |
Majors, Minors and Exotics

Our honest recommendation: pick one or two and learn them deeply.
Best starting choices
- EUR/USD — the most liquid pair in the world. Tight spreads, smooth movement, textbook technical behaviour. If you learn one pair, learn this one.
- XAU/USD (Gold) — excellent trends, respects levels beautifully, and Indians already have strong intuition for it.
- USD/JPY — very orderly, and active during Indian morning hours if that suits your schedule.
Why not ten pairs? Because each one has a personality — its own typical range, its own rhythm, its own reaction to news. Watching one pair every day for a month teaches you more than watching ten pairs once each.
The specialist's advantage: Traders who know one market intimately consistently read it better than traders who scan twenty. Depth beats breadth, especially early on.
What Makes a Pair Move?
Every currency reflects its economy. The main things markets watch:
- Interest rates — the single biggest driver. Central bank decisions move currencies powerfully.
- Inflation data — shapes expectations about future rates.
- Employment figures — US Non-Farm Payrolls is the most watched of all.
- Economic growth — GDP and related indicators.
- Political and global events — these can shift sentiment quickly.
You don't memorise all of this. You keep an economic calendar open, you know which events are scheduled this week, and you let the chart show you how the market is responding.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the major currency pairs?
The seven majors are EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, AUD/USD, USD/CAD and NZD/USD. Each includes the US dollar and they are the most heavily traded pairs in the world.
What is the difference between base and quote currency?
The base currency is listed first and always equals one unit. The quote currency is listed second and shows how much of it is needed to buy one unit of the base. In EUR/USD at 1.0850, one euro costs 1.0850 US dollars.
Which currency pair is best for beginners?
EUR/USD is widely considered the best starting point because it is the most liquid pair with the tightest spreads and smooth, technically well-behaved movement. Gold (XAU/USD) is also very popular with learners.
How many pairs should I trade at once?
One or two, especially at the start. Learning a single market deeply builds far better instincts than spreading attention across many.
Is gold a currency pair?
XAU/USD is technically a metal quoted against the US dollar, but it appears on charts and is analysed exactly like a currency pair, using the same technical tools.
Start With One
The list of available pairs is long, and that's genuinely good news — it means opportunity exists in many places. But your path forward is narrow and simple: choose one market, study it every day, and let real understanding build.
Our recorded online course walks you through pairs, gold and chart analysis step by step — from your phone, at whatever pace suits your life.
